Trump Daily 8/27/2020 – Catching Up Before the Final Convention Night

Doing one large write-up on the convention so here’s the other news you may have missed.

The Daily Beast detailed the relationship between Jared Kushner and Kirill Dmitriev who runs Russia’s sovereign wealth fund. Dmitriev will be familiar to you if you followed my coverage of the Mueller report. He set up covert meetings with Kushner and Erik Prince despite being under sanction by the United States. One of the earliest shipments of ventilators Kushner secured came from Dmitriev. They were never used as they were junk.

Trump has frequently warned of foreign governments somehow hacking mail-in voting. The Office of the Director of National Intelligence has seen no evidence of this. Such large scale vote manipulation is functionally impossible because of how the US election system is run.

The NY Attorney General’s Office has detailed their investigation into The Trump Organization and it’s as we thought – they’re investing the group for lying about the value of properties both to banks and for tax purposes. Michael Cohen testified this was happening before Congress and the financial documents provided by Mary Trump to the New York Times proved it. Eric Trump is not cooperating with the investigation and his lawyer has alluded to him pleading the 5th amendment.

The Trump campaign released a fairly generic video about what a great job he’s done. All of the images used in the video are from stock footage. They just released another ad about how violent protests are across the country. The footage used for this ad is from Spain.

Per the former Chief of Staff at DHS, Trump was seeking ways to maim and injure immigrants at the border. DHS and CBP later considered using a microwave weapon which induces the feeling of your skin burning off. (This is a real device built by Raytheon though it has never been used.)

The CDC changed their guidelines to say people who have been directly exposed to someone with the virus do not need to be tested. This is a blatant attempt to decrease the number of reported cases before the election. The Covid-19 task force waited until Dr. Fauci was having surgery to discuss the change. Dr. Redfield partially walked back this change, but his statement no longer appears on the CDC website. This change came because of pressure from The White House.

  • The president is complaining to aides that the Covid-19 statistics must be inflated. It is nearly certain the statistics are currently undercounting both deaths and infections. Notably, early on, the president said he did not want a ship full of infected people to dock in the US as it would raise the number of infections in the country.
  • The president has admitted he views more testing as problematic as the increased number of confirmed cases “make ourselves look bad.” He does not actually care how many people die from the virus. He cares how many people are reported as having died from the virus.
  • The president’s businesses in other countries have been seeking Covid-19 aid from those foreign governments. Democrats in the House are now seeking information about these actions. This is a blatant conflict of interest that would have been completely avoidable had Trump divested himself from his business. He is the first president to run businesses in other countries while also dealing diplomatically with those foreign countries.
  • In a bizarrely unprecedented act, the Justice Department is requesting to drop the prosecution of Mike Flynn AFTER his guilty plea. Flynn swore under oath that he was guilty. The president publicly stated he was guilty. While I’m not legally well-versed enough to say that the Justice Department has NEVER asked to drop a prosecution after a guilty plea, I’ve not been able to find another example. Barr’s argument is full of laughably bad legal argument, hinging on Flynn’s lie about his calls with the Russian ambassador not being “material” to an investigation about his ties to… the Russian government. When asked how his actions would be viewed by history tonight, Barr said that “history is written by the winners.” This is one of the most corrupt acts by an attorney general in American history. There is still a small chance that Judge Sullivan simply rejects the motion from the government and continues on to sentence Flynn.
  • A final note that tonight the House Intelligence Committee released all of their interview transcripts from the Russia investigation. So far I have not seen any major news come from this, but there are several thousand pages to go through so there may be stories arising from them this week.

  • The president is planning to wind down the Covid-19 task force at the end of the month. There are currently zero states which have met the requirements for easing restrictions. New York is the only state which has passed its peak infection number. The virus is still spreading in the rest of the country.

  • FEMA intercepted an order to the VA including 5 million protective masks and redirected them to the national stockpile. The VA pleaded that they do not have enough supplies to treat sick veterans. FEMA then gave them 10% of what they had ordered.
  • The NRSC, which coordinates Republican Senate campaigns, sent out a memo on dealing with Covid-19 by attacking China instead of defending the president. After the Trump campaign threatened that any candidates heeding this advice would lose Trump’s campaign support, the NRSC walked back the memo.

  • Trump said in today’s press briefing that scarves generally work better than masks because they’re thicker. This is dangerously false. Scarves are extremely porous.

The rest of today’s piece focuses on Jared Kushner. Kushner has absolutely zero experience in any sort of medical work, much less overseeing and organizing large organizations dealing with a pandemic. Yet he is in charge of a significant portion of the US response.

  • Kushner’s covid-19 task force has been using private emails to conduct official business. Kushner has frequently used private emails as part of his job as well as encrypted messaging apps which both prevent oversight of his activities. Those concerned about Hillary Clinton doing the same are strangely unconcerned by this.

  • In yesterday’s press conference, Trump defending the US not immediately adopting the WHO coronavirus test by saying they didn’t make an offer and that the test was bad. These are lies. WHO did offer the test and it’s accurate. Dr. Brix, the coronavirus response coordinator, said tests outside the US had a 50% false positive rate. Only two tests have had a high false positive rate – the initial test used by China and the initial test developed by the US CDC. No valid explanation has been given for why the US rejected the WHO test.
  • This is a must-read article. The Army Corps of Engineers has not been given any orders on any actions regarding the outbreak. FEMA has not been given a mission from HHS. The VA, which has extra hospital bed capacity, has not been asked to prepare that capacity for civilian use.

  • When Trump announced that flights from Europe were being suspended (which wasn’t true), not only did we fail to inform any European countries, but we also didn’t tell our own diplomatic staff. The embassies were scrambling to find out what was happening for hours with no guidance from the State Department.
  • The president said that a canceled fundraiser for Cory Gardner would be moved to the White House. This is illegal. The Gardner campaign had to clarify that the event was not a fundraiser.
  • In both a tweet and during today’s press conference, Trump blamed Obama for the slow testing rollout. This is a lie he’s repeated several times.
  • Matt Schlapp, who runs the CPAC conference where several congressman came into contact with someone infected with the coronavirus, said that 2,000 screenings were done on attendees at the hotel. According to the hotel and the health department, he is lying and the actual number is zero. Schlapp’s only response to the story is to call it “fake news.”
  • During today’s press conference, Trump announced Google was building a nationwide website for screening the coronavirus with 1700 engineers working on it. He said it would be available soon. He lied. The website will be for Bay Area residents only and doesn’t have nearly that many staff working on it. Google (or rather the Google sister company working on it) was not informed he would be making this announcement and almost immediately corrected the president.
  • The White House sent signed copies of today’s DOW performance to several conservative members of the media to highlight the market rising during today’s press conference. They scheduled everything so the CEOs he invited would be speaking until the markets closed. Trump started taking questions after his answers could no longer affect the market.
  • During that press conference, Trump said he closed the border with Europe “a while ago.” It hasn’t taken effect yet. When a reporter, Yamiche Alcindor, asked him about closing down the pandemic task force which should be overseeing our actions right now, Trump said it was a “nasty question” then said he didn’t know anything about it and didn’t think he’d done it. He has taken credit for it in the past.

  • In the White House, Trump blamed the problems with coronavirus testing on Barack Obama. Aside from the fact that Trump has been president for over 3 years, the rule he’s referring to here was never implemented. He’s lying.
  • Despite claims that the Ukraine military hold was due to a policy review, no policy review ever took place. The documents showing this were withheld from Congress without any legal basis.
  • The president called into The Sean Hannity show and told several lies about the coronavirus and that he had a “hunch” the numbers were wrong. He mentioned that people are getting better quickly and going to work with the virus. When asked for comment, the White House said he was referring to telecommuting. The president in the past week has told several outright lies about the virus and made several statements illustrating that he doesn’t understand any of the underlying science – such as saying this is a flu virus and asking why the flu vaccine can’t be deployed against it.
  • In the same interview, the president told one of his most frequent lies, claiming he is the one responsible for the Veterans Choice law. The law was written by John McCain and Bernie Sanders. It was signed into law by Barack Obama. He has told this lie about the law over 120 times. He also blamed Obama for the 1994 crime bill. Realizing his error, Trump then said Obama had been speaking about the bill at the time. Barack Obama was an unknown legal professor at the time. The president lied about this.
