Trump Daily 5/7/2020

  • The president is complaining to aides that the Covid-19 statistics must be inflated. It is nearly certain the statistics are currently undercounting both deaths and infections. Notably, early on, the president said he did not want a ship full of infected people to dock in the US as it would raise the number of infections in the country.
  • The president has admitted he views more testing as problematic as the increased number of confirmed cases “make ourselves look bad.” He does not actually care how many people die from the virus. He cares how many people are reported as having died from the virus.
  • The president’s businesses in other countries have been seeking Covid-19 aid from those foreign governments. Democrats in the House are now seeking information about these actions. This is a blatant conflict of interest that would have been completely avoidable had Trump divested himself from his business. He is the first president to run businesses in other countries while also dealing diplomatically with those foreign countries.
  • In a bizarrely unprecedented act, the Justice Department is requesting to drop the prosecution of Mike Flynn AFTER his guilty plea. Flynn swore under oath that he was guilty. The president publicly stated he was guilty. While I’m not legally well-versed enough to say that the Justice Department has NEVER asked to drop a prosecution after a guilty plea, I’ve not been able to find another example. Barr’s argument is full of laughably bad legal argument, hinging on Flynn’s lie about his calls with the Russian ambassador not being “material” to an investigation about his ties to… the Russian government. When asked how his actions would be viewed by history tonight, Barr said that “history is written by the winners.” This is one of the most corrupt acts by an attorney general in American history. There is still a small chance that Judge Sullivan simply rejects the motion from the government and continues on to sentence Flynn.
  • A final note that tonight the House Intelligence Committee released all of their interview transcripts from the Russia investigation. So far I have not seen any major news come from this, but there are several thousand pages to go through so there may be stories arising from them this week.

  • The Trump campaign is running an ad showing Biden meeting with Chinese officials in a weak attempt to smear him. One of the men they show Biden meeting with is Gary Locke, an American who was the governor of Washington and Secretary of Commerce. The Trump campaign responded to inquiries by saying the clip was included because Hunter Biden was on the trip.
  • During a press conference, Trump said there was no shortage anywhere in the US of protective masks. Hospitals are currently taking hand-sewn donations from the public because they do not have enough.
  • This NBC article details the huge boosts private companies are getting from the Trump administration’s policies on distributing protective medical gear. The federal government has emergency authority to dictate where supplies go and at what costs. They are not using this power. Instead the government is funneling supplies back into commercial sellers who are selling to the highest bidder. The states are competing against each other and against the federal government for overpriced gear. This is in line with Trump’s view that the federal government doesn’t really have a role in the pandemic and everything should be left up to the governors. This policy is a disaster.

  • Director of the National Trade Council, Peter Navarro, said his economics PhD qualified him to read statistical data about chloroquine in response to a question of why he thought he knew more about the drug’s efficacy than Dr. Anthony Fauci who has spent decades studying infectious diseases. Despite Navarro’s claim, there is still no evidence the drug is useful in treating Covid-19.
  • Kayleigh McEnany will replace Stephanie Grisham to become Trump’s fourth press secretary. McEnany recently said that because of Trump we would not see Covid-19 come to the US which she welcomed as a great change from the “awful Obama administration.” She has lied repeatedly in service of the president and like Trump and his new Chief of Staff Mark Meadows, McEnany is a birther who has championed the disproven conspiracy theory that Barack Obama was born in Kenya.

Trump Lost His Mind in Today’s Press Conference 4/6/2020

You need to watch this video of what happened in the press room tonight.

Republicans had the opportunity to remove him. This is what they chose instead.

10,000 Americans are dead and the president is mocking and berating reporters for asking questions about it, lying about it, and blaming Barack Obama for it.

  • Trump said in today’s press briefing that scarves generally work better than masks because they’re thicker. This is dangerously false. Scarves are extremely porous.

The rest of today’s piece focuses on Jared Kushner. Kushner has absolutely zero experience in any sort of medical work, much less overseeing and organizing large organizations dealing with a pandemic. Yet he is in charge of a significant portion of the US response.

  • Kushner’s covid-19 task force has been using private emails to conduct official business. Kushner has frequently used private emails as part of his job as well as encrypted messaging apps which both prevent oversight of his activities. Those concerned about Hillary Clinton doing the same are strangely unconcerned by this.

Coronavirus update 3/27/2020

For at least the fourth day in a row, ~20% of positive test results in the US have come from the last 24 hours. (This means the RATE of new detections has been steadily increasing each day.)

19,160 new cases in the last 24 hours, putting us over 100,000.

Today the president said he told Mike Pence, who heads the task force, not to call the governors of Michigan and Washington because they haven’t expressed enough appreciation. He took to twitter to call Governor Whitmer a half-wit.

Data taken from Ryan Struyk (The blank spaces on the right are the remaining days until Easter, the goal Trump set for getting people to start returning to work).

Coronavirus Tracking 3/26/2020

For at least the third day in a row, ~20% of positive test results came in the last 24 hours. We had an increase of 16,862.

Positive test results are still increasing at an exponential rate.

Tonight the president said he thinks governors are asking him for medical supplies they don’t need.

People are bringing up GM making ventilators. The number of ventilators GM has made is zero. Why? Trump thinks the $1 billion price tag is too high.

It was one month ago today that Donald Trump said there were only 15 cases in the US and that number would be going down “soon.”

We will break 100,000 positive test results tomorrow night.

Coronavirus Graph

Everything I have to update is related to the virus. I’m skipping fact checking to put up this chart. Today the president said we are near the end of the outbreak and that he’s wanting the country to begin operating again during Easter.

19.5% of positive test results are from the last 24 hours. That’s 10,313 infections. The last blue line is today.

Look at the trend.

Now look at how far away Easter is.

He is uniquely unprepared for what is coming.
