- Donald Trump mused about delaying the November election as part of his oft-repeated claim that the election results will be fraudulent. This concept is so egregious that the co-founder of the right wing Federalist Society called the mere suggestion impeachable. Joe Biden in April predicted Trump would seek to delay the election. The Trump campaign, the White House, and multiple right-wing pundits all attacked Biden for saying Trump would muse about delaying the election, which he has now done. While a few have admitted they were wrong, most are still defending Trump. Senator Cornyn went so far as to say it was just a joke. What a kidder!
- The D.C. court of appeals has granted an en banc hearing regarding dismissing the Michael Flynn case. The Department of Justice bizarrely said the prosecution should be withdrawn AFTER Flynn had already pleaded guilty. A 3 judge panel ruled that the judge had to dismiss the case because of this in a 2-1 vote. The judge is now seeking a ruling from the entire appeals court.
- The US currently does not have any national testing plan. Vanity Fair discovered that Jared Kushner’s task force developed one but scrapped it as they thought the virus would simply fade away and it was hitting blue states harder than red states. The White House is denying this. The article is worth reading in its entirety: https://www.vanityfair.com/news/2020/07/how-jared-kushners-secret-testing-plan-went-poof-into-thin-air.
- DHS was using its intelligence apparatus to compile dossiers on reporters who wrote about DHS wrongdoing. While the man in charge of this program has been removed, acting Deputy DHS Secretary Cuccinelli recently relaxed the exact sort of oversight which would have prevented something like this from happening. Cuccinelli, acting DHS Secretary wolf, and the man responsible for the dossiers are all temporary appointments because none of them can get confirmed by the Senate.
- Speaking of, Anthony Tata withdrew as the nominee to be Policy Undersecretary at the Department of Defense. This came after Tata’s Twitter feed was shown to contain numerous bigoted comments and conspiracy theories, including accusing John Brennan of triggering an assassination attempt against the president by quoting Cicero. Legally Tata is barred from holding the undersecretary position as he was nominated for it and withdrawn. To get around this, they’ve simply named him as a special adviser and given him the same duties as the undersecretary position. A huge number of unqualified Trump appointees are currently in acting positions as they would never clear confirmation in the Senate and Trump knows the Senate will never hold him accountable for these illegal appointments.
- Trump said the Russian bounty program was a hoax but that he’d take action on it if it is brought to his attention, which is an odd response to a question about a topic he just called a hoax. Not only has this information been in his briefing materials, but its now a widely reported topic. Trump however will not take any actions which may upset Vladimir Putin, even if he is paying to murder US troops.
- After losing the Supreme Court decision over DACA, the Trump administration is publicly interpreting the case to mean they can do basically anything as long as they follow the Administrative Practices Act. (This is ludicrous.) Two weeks ago tonight, when asked about healthcare, the president said he would be replacing the entirety of the Affordable Care Act with an executive order within two weeks. Donald Trump said he would overhaul the entirety of the US healthcare system, by himself, without passing any laws, in 14 days. There are two hours left on Trump’s claim, but I’ll go ahead and call this one and say that Donald Trump is once again full of shit.
